Why Horror?

Recently, I have multiple people ask me what attracts me to the horror genre so I decided to share.

I’ve spent multiple years in the military and law enforcement and have seen the atrocities that people commit upon each other. In addition, my childhood was hard; my family had little, lacked stability, and possessed toxic traits that left lasting impacts on me into adulthood.

Now, as a parent, I’ve sacrificed everything I have to ensure my kids don’t have to endure the same.

I have seen birthday parties ruined by a drive-by shooting, but at the same time I’ve seen a community of people come together to support a family in need following the untimely death of their sole breadwinner.

I have a very bleak view of life and humanity, which leads me to being a little more perceptive of the additional emotions that lie under the surface in everyday events. Moving to a new city can be fun and exciting, but there is always some somber emotion underlying the joy for the things you leave behind.

Regardless of the intended emotion for a story, incorporation of the horror aspect makes the story hit somewhere different and draws parallels to real life and the real human experience.
